NAV Drone Mobile: Getting Started

Getting Started

To plan an operation in NAV Drone, you must meet the pilot certification and drone registration requirements applicable to the desired category of operation as regulated by Transport Canada. Please consult Transport Canada's Drone Safety page for more information.

Pilot Requirements

Pilot licensing requirements depend on the category of operation you wish to conduct.

  • Basic operations: Requires a Pilot Certificate - Basic Operations or Advanced Operations
  • Advanced operation: Requires a Pilot Certificate - Advanced Operation
  • Micro drones: No pilot certificate is required, but operators should follow Transport Canada safety guidelines.

Pilot Certificate in NAV Drone

To plan operations in the Basic and Advanced category you must first enter the details of you Pilot Certificate in the Documents tab.  See Gear and Document ManagementOpen a new window.

Drone Requirements

  • All drones weighing at least 250 g must be registered. This includes custom-built drones and drones built from a kit or off-the shelf.
  • Drones under 250 g do not need to be registered unless something is attached to it that increases its weight to 250 g or more.
  • Foreign pilots or operators can’t register drones and need an SFOC-RPAS to comply with the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).

Drone Registration in NAV Drone

You must add your Transport Canada drone registration number to the drone profile in your Gear in order to plan Basic or Advanced operations with the drone.  Foreign pilots should obtain an SFOC-RPAS and add SFOC-RPAS number to the drone profile instead of a registration number.  See Gear and Document ManagementOpen a new window.
