New Phraseology for SIDs and STARs:
Beginning April 27, 2017
SIDs and STARs provide efficient flight paths, safe and predictable trajectories, and a significant reduction in communications between air traffic controllers and flight crew. Reliance on these types of procedures has made it imperative that they are understood correctly by all parties.
The new phraseology
ICAO’s new phraseology is more explicit, eliminating possible misinterpretation by pilots, introducing key terms—‘climb via’ or ‘descend via’—to explicitly indicate to flight crews if they should abide by speed and altitude restrictions associated with a given procedure.
